What is HVAC?  Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort.  HVAC  system design is a sub discipline of mechanical engineering, based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer.

WHAT DOES HVAC MEAN?

Here is a more descriptive definition-

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment perform heating and/or cooling for residential, commercial or industrial buildings. The HVAC system may also be responsible for providing fresh outdoor air to dilute interior airborne contaminants such as odors from occupants, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) emitted from interior furnishings, chemicals used for cleaning, etc. A properly designed system will provide a comfortable indoor environment year round when properly maintained.

HEATING IN HVAC

The heating component of your HVAC system provides a warm climate for your home in the cooler months of the year. Today, the most popular type of heating system is the forced air system, but many homes also use radiant heat systems and geothermal heating systems, among others. In all of the systems, heat is created at a central source and distributed through the home via different means

Forced Air systems use a furnace to heat the air and then disperse it through the house via ductwork and in-room vents.

No matter which type of system you have, your HVAC system makes your home warm and  enjoyable for you and your family during the colder months.

VENTILATION IN HVAC

The “V” (for ventilation) in HVAC may be something of a mystery. What is ventilation and why do you need it?

The simple reason is, ventilation is required for both HVAC comfort and good air quality. Without enough ventilation in your space, you will eventually (and sometimes quickly) experience comfort issues and even health problems. These could range from having trouble sleeping in a stuffy bedroom to experiencing Sick Building Syndrome in a commercial space.

So what is ventilation exactly, and how does it work with heating and air conditioning systems to maximize your HVAC comfort?

According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), an HVAC system should “heat, cool, clean, ventilate, humidify and dehumidify as needed to provide health and HVAC comfort.

VENTILATION FOR HVAC is the exchanging or replacing air in any space to provide high indoor air quality which involves temperature control, oxygen replenishment, and removal of moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Ventilation removes unpleasant smells and excessive moisture, introduces outside air, keeps interior building air circulating, and prevents stagnation of the interior air.

AC IN HVAC

While AC stands for just the last part: “Air Conditioning.” In other words, when we talk about AC, we’re generally talking about the system that cools the air in your home.

Your HVAC system is also in charge of keeping you cool during the warmer months. There are several different types of AC units, each with their own pros and cons. Whether you have central air (used in conjunction with forced air systems), split or ductless AC units, the process that each system uses to cool your home is similar.
